New Citizen Design

New Citizen Design is an agent, consultant and producer of design and design thinking.

We collaborate with both established and talented designers to create inspiring and aesthetic products for the new citizen’s living and working environment. We have a portfolio of design products and landscape art, curated on their consciousness for a sustainable society and the well being of its citizens. All of our designers have a story to tell.

We provide content to our client’s intent and help it shape, using the specific brainpower of our designers. Our strategic consultancy is a combination of corporate and design thinking and enhances creative business ideas, strategies and product(line)s, through workshops and design journeys.

We develop and offer ‘artisan design’ in a co-creation between our designers and local craftspeople worldwide.

We call our approach The Dutch Approach because we work from what moves people and makes them feel comfortable. From there on, a spark is added to enhance a playful functionality and a triggering message.

Designers with New Citizen Design

We work together with multiple designers:

new citizen design ncd jan willem de laive tonny wormer marcel van der veer christie van der haak sander wassink vider alulight carpets stacked happy foamboySander Wassink graduated in 2012 at Dutch Design Academy Eindhoven and has been named Holland’s #3 of the new generation Dutch Designers (2016).

Wassink is an artist and designer challenging us to reconsider our ideas of beauty, aesthetic value and status. Amid new construction, new production, and constant proliferation of new forms and facades, Wassink turns his attention to the discarded, the abandoned and the left-over. He attempts to reimagine what can be done with the already partially formed. What new possibilities exist in the surfaces and materials that are half-built or half-destroyed.

Whether his object is the partly demolished facade of an abandoned building, or the everyday detritus from our over productive culture, Wassink asks what new forms and new visions of beauty already exist to be discovered and appreciated. The history of these objects only adds to the story that – apart from their aesthetic value – gives them that bit of extra. Wassink’s light designs are an example of his design approach: thrown out glass and ceramics are formed into series of unique and aesthetic design products.

She makes use of nylon materials and artificial lighting, which give her sculptures the illusion of chandeliers, fountains or gigantic precious stones. Berkehemer did flagship store performances for Agnes B (Paris), Christian Louboutin (Miami) and assisted at Maison Margiela. Her landscape design Lost Pearls is in the Rotterdam Euromast Park and is also certified playground equipment.

new citizen design ncd jan willem de laive tonny wormer marcel van der veer christie van der haak sander wassink vider alulight carpets stacked happy foamboyPeter Hopman is a multi-faceted industrial designer and is founder of Bureau Lakervelder. Hopman often works in co-operations, for instance for DROOG Design, MDVRV and West 8. He designed the welcome and ticket counter of Expo 2008 in Hannover, 68 bathrooms in the Amsterdam Lloyd Hotel and the redesign of Café de Unie in Rotterdam. His twist of the iconic lettering of the former Rotterdam Central Station into ‘Traan Laten’ was made into a well-appreciated documentary. New Citizen Design works with Hopman for his Green Roomdivider which can be used seperately or jointed in, for instance, office spaces.

Blurring boundaries between products design and fashion while investigating the interacts between body and material is the core of my work.

Childhood inspiration, archetypes, primitive forms with a hands on technique describes my creative signature. If you would have to give it a name I would prefer researcher and visual designer, always with an unorthodox approach towards new processes.

“Despite the focused forms and technique there is always the need for speed aiming to keep ideas and concepts open, translucent and flexible to adapting new conditions. With surrealistic atmospheres and optical illusions often as effect.” ~HEYNIEK

Eric de Meij and Frank van Dongen are the designers of Stamtafel (tree table). Stamtafel tables are designed to serve as the natural meeting place to talk and eat together with our loved ones.

The Art Nouveau Dutch Design is inspired by how trees are rooted in the earth in search for grip and nutrition, and how their branches extend into the air in search for light and vision. The ingenious tree-like furniture is hand-made from the best types of wood and the finest tempered and laminated glass. Stamtafel tables are symbolic for both the indestructible central structure and the subtly interrelated peripheral forces that hold strong families together, generation after generation. Stamtafel has recently been further developed into a recycled cardboard version, topped with a whiteboard coating to be used as ‘inspiration table’ for work sessions or printed with a set selection of designs or print-your-own design.

In this way they create an extended future for their products.

Maxime Ansiau’s approach reveals a double quest: the desire to represent beauty and the search for meaning. His creations suggest a delicate evocation, a subtle logic, which is the connivance between the subject and the material.

new citizen design ncd jan willem de laive tonny wormer marcel van der veer christie van der haak sander wassink vider alulight carpets stacked happy foamboyMarcel van der Veer (1970) is an interior designer.

Since 1995, he has been working both independently and in collaboration with several architect offices and design companies on a wide variety of assignments.

The office realizes especially renovations and designs of bars, restaurants and public spaces, high-end interiors for private homes, offices and shops.

The design focus is often on custom solutions for lighting, acoustics, furniture and image-defining wall coverings in order to get a distinctive image. New Citizen Design works with Van der Veer on products that follow from some of these custom solutions.

new citizen design ncd jan willem de laive tonny wormer marcel van der veer christie van der haak sander wassink vider alulight carpets stacked happy foamboyDrawings by hand are the basis for Christie van der Haak’s pattern designs. Almost meditatively she distracts from the bustle of everyday life and focuses on the design that eventually becomes patterns for art prints, wallpaper, woven textiles and even buildings. She is famous for her creative use of colour, but also her black-and-white patterns really communicate.

Christie’s pattern designs connect to the philosophy of William Morris who, in the nineteenth century, reacted to the ugliness of mass production and said about his designs that ‘no pattern should be without some sort of meaning’. They also relate very strongly to our present lives in which we are flooded with information and are visually orientated. We almost split ourselves up to be able to digest all the simultaneous information. In Christie van der Haak’s patterns, the viewer can also get lost, depending on the way he or she looks at them. With real focus, there is a world to discover. A fantasy in which to drown or an imagination to dream of.

New Citizen Design and Christie van der Haak co-operate on a line of pattern-designed products of which the vinyl Christie’s Carpet is the first. Christie’s great wish is to open up to a wider public through design: in this case, art made reproducible.

new citizen design ncd jan willem de laive tonny wormer marcel van der veer christie van der haak sander wassink vider alulight carpets stacked happy foamboyCésare Peeren is co-founder of Superuse studios, a new kind of architectural practice of ‘process architecture’, in that the design method is a process. The process involves experimentation and prototyping with waste materials to identify and uncover hidden functional, ergonomic and aesthetic properties. In the same way, the inherent qualities, properties, constraints and needs of the location, construction, neighbours etc. are investigated for opportunities for integration into the design.

Using these Superuse principles, Césare has designed products, public furniture, playgrounds, interior fit-outs for: large offices, shops and restaurants, renovations, houses and cities. All examples of how re-use can lead to hip and contemporary design with a new design aesthetic. As well as design, Césare teaches, lectures, gives presentations, conducts workshops and continues research in the re-use potential of waste materials.

Design Thinking

New Citizen Design provides content to client’s intent and helps it shape, using the specific brainpower of its designers. Our strategic consultancy is a combination of corporate and design thinking and enhances creative business ideas, strategies and product(line)s, through workshops and design journeys.
Would you like to explore new routes to transform your business or achieve your goals?
New Citizen Design can tailor collaborative design journeys or work on the basis of a specific assignment.
Our design thinking approach is about people, what moves them and how to touch them.

The functionality of our Dutch Approach is in the stir it gives to behaviour and/or well-being. Functional iconism in this way is not only tangible in products, buildings, interiors and landscapes, but also intangible in terms of ‘social iconism’. The core of New Citizen Design’s Dutch Approach is ‘functional iconism’, which means that our design concepts are

  • powerful,
  • clear in their central idea and concept
  • often provoking a smile on the face
  • and always making contact.
