Milly Molly Mandy sweet as sugar candy, pretty little eyes of blue Every body would be if they only could be walking out with you Wishin on a Monday when I see you Sunday that your heart is true Milly Molly Mandy sweet as sugar candy I’m in love with you                                                     (Glyn Poole, 1973)

Milly-Molly-Mandy stories did not only inspire seventies

singer Glen Poole, but also Dutch artist-designer Madeleine

Berkhemer. As a child, she was only allowed to look at her

mother’s antiquarian Milly-Molly-Mandy Storybook with her

hands on her back. The main character of Joyce Lankester

Brisley’s (1896-1976) books about Millicent Margaretha

Amanda, already fascinated Berkhemer as a child:

‘Milly-Molly-Mandy to me is the personalization of woman

in general. No woman is only one type of woman, but has

something of a split personality. Milly-Molly-Mandy reminds

me of the three graces: beauty, virtue and happiness. That’s

what I like about them as a symbol; that one woman can be

part of different worlds. I wanted to visualize and personalize

all three, so that Milly-Molly-Mandy all come to live and

reflect to the viewer what he or she would like to see.’
